Akai MPC5000 - the big, black, $3,500 groovebox

So here's the new thing from Akai - the MPC5000 (That's the official site). It's the usual MPC sample/sequencer stuff, with a built in VA synth & arpeggiator, lots of effects and outs. Meanwhile, JJ, the mysterious programmer re-writing the operating system for the bottom-of-the-range MPC1000 - is going from strength to strength. Having refined and finessed the normal MPC functions as far as he could, he's announced JJOS2, a completely new system adding endless bonkers new features. I read the JJ forum every day and I can't keep up.

Looks pretty cool.

I don't want to be too critical before I've seen it in the flesh. But I hope Akai have realised that the reason why many of us use a DAW and MPC in combination because we want our own special compressors effects, eqs etc. (It has no master Aux send? )

So for that money these 49 built in effects will need to be nothing short of amazing.

JJ (the mysterious programmer) is a genius and a godsend. I wonder how long it will be before we see some of the new Chop, random and cycle features in his new MPC1000 OS.

I think for the price this will not be very successful. Besides the lack of their OS support, they have yet to release a nice sequencer/controller which could have been done very cheaply and imo sold very well.

I think this may break the company. They put too much in one product. Why would you put in a VA when most current users already have one? Not only that, the professionals most likely already have one(or a real analog studio electronics one). I already sold my MPC 2500. I was not impressed in the end. It's much easier for me to use a software sampler. I may go for a mpc 500 in the future.

it looks like the price has been updated to $2500 on other sites?

this is what's called a flagship product... it shall only be purchased with money obtained via crack cocaine sales!

Oh, I see. They made a Roland MC-909 seven years later and three times the price. Great.

here's a line from their press release

"The MPC5000's virtual analog synth eliminates need for external analog synth modules or buggy software based synthesizers."

now HOW THE HELL is akai going to talk about bugs without acknowledging their dirty history...

but in better knews, jj's os2 has recently referenced a couple future functions, such as PAD PATTERN mode (which appears to be some sort of arpeggiator) and the ability to control QLINK/QREAL data with incoming midi CCs...faaaantastic.

HAHAHAHA.. Maybe they ARE talkin about THEIR buggy SW history..
I know my MPD16 (even in XP) has mad Bugs with the USB driver.

and indirect, direct reference maybe?
LOL

Go Akai!

Heads up for Just Blaze's epic hate on the MPC5000, people need to know about this!

well it sounds like you think there are problems *after* reading what just blaze says, but did you find them on your own accord?

also why would you buy "two" of a new device without making sure one of them works right? the thing was slated to be powerful enough that why would you need a second one right off the bat
