'Lost' creator JJ Abrams is a synth geek

Tim writes to let me know that 'Lost' creator JJ Abrams is a synth geek. In this interview he tells of "A former closet adjacent to my office that's now a recording area. I have a keyboard and guitars and a computer set up there. I love recording music." He goes on to say: "I have a number of keyboards that are now, because of software, absolutely irrelevant. I probably will never play them, and yet I keep them.. In a nice "Sing the theme tune... write the theme tune..." touch, he wrote and recorded the theme songs for 'Alias' and 'Lost'. He's also a mate of Thomas Dolby, (who now has an entertainingly geeky blog). He's a fan of Garritan Personal Orchestra (he says: "Pretty amazing"), and he has a SidStation: "Just got my SidStation and I love it. I have a studio full of gear, many synths old and new, and the SidStation is a great addition. It's like nothing else, and that's a fantastic and rare thing. What you people have done is a tribute to innovative thinking and retro tech alike." If you're out there, JJ, do get in touch and tell us a) about those old synths and b) What's up with all that ranch dressing?

Is "Garritan Personal Orchestra" pretty amazing?

I didn't find it so. Reminded me of a GM version of an orchestra.

Yes! Since we now have software, we will never need to learn how to play the guitar, a keyboard, drums, or learn how to sing! JJ Abrams is so enlightened! Why, he oughtta set public policy too!

Does LOST really have a theme song? Aside from that one dropping note, I mean?

If JJ was a REAL analog synth fan, the hatch would have a moog modular (or Dharma modular), it would fit right in the vintage setting. Ok i'm a big analog gear and Lost fan, i admit.

Oooh. I love Lost. I wonder if he checks out my blog! : ) Yeah, some synth gear would be nice on the show. I heard there is a Triadex Muse in the movie Brainstorm. Unrelated, but it came to mind. I need to check it out. Lost should have a Synthi in it.

Well, At least the hatch has a bitchen looking reel to reel and some records to listen to. Not to mention the Apple II. But yes a Dharma Initiative modular would be frickin sweet.

This is absolutely retarded. Abrams was just saying that some of his keyboards are irrelevant because now he can get the same sounds out of software. He didn't say anything about musicianship being irrelevant.

There is an group in the Alias show called Prophet Five.

Ha!
I knew it. I feel vindicated.
If you have watched Alias this season at all, you know that there is some evil project or entity or conspiracy called "Prophet 5" which I just knew had to be a reference...

" I heard there is a Triadex Muse in the movie Brainstorm."

I used to work in the building where they filmed Brainstorm! It's an amazing angular building built in the sixties that now houses part of Glaxo. Anyway, OT, sorry.

Yeh there is no "theme song" for 'Lost'.. its just a few ambient sounds layered together - it only lasts about 15 seconds too

thats ok tho, coz the show is pretty good

If you watch the dvds there is a theme song at the end of the episodes, but they don't play on tv because they show the scenes from next week. I don't know if that is the one he's talking about, though.

Mr. Abrams has now been tapped to revive the Star Trek franchise (if such a thing is possible at this point). Interesting to read a little bit more about him.
