Jason from Theremin World writes: "Hey MT. I'm here at Ethermusic 2005, a 4 day theremin festival sponsored by Moog Music, the Orange Peel (a great club in Asheville, NC), and ThereminWorld. There's a ton of amazing theremin activity here. I'll be blogging all my photos and videos at ThereminWorld as soon as I'm back, but for now, here's a teaser...
Floyd Engels built 10 reproductions of Leon Theremin's theremin cello. He brought a couple to the festival and let anybody who wanted to try it out take a whirl. I couldn't
do much with it, but it was certainly not the instrument's fault. The person playing it in this photo is Jon Bernhart of The Lothars (an all theremin band from Boston).
Floyd Engels still has a theremin cellos for sale for $5500. He is a master craftsman and his attention to detail is amazing. He also built 17 replicas of the diamond-shaped speaker used by Clara Rockmore (right) but stopped because they were too labor-intensive (it took him 40 hours to weave EACH grill cover by hand!).
Moog Music also set up this great Voyager/Moogerfooger synth rig for us to try out between theremin activities. I'll send you more details on it soon, along with a report on a new polyphonic theremin invented by one of the participants. "
