eBay of the day: The $720 tambourine

Certainly, as tambourines go, this is pretty hot: Nice wood, hard case, painted bits, some spare heads. But because eBay item #140023575491, is a Riq (Egyptian Tambourine) made by top Lebanese percussion instrument maker Kevork, it's currently $720 with a day to go. To put it in context, the most expensive tambourine sold on eBay in the last few months was item #120021911708, a blood-spattered tambourine played by the Brian Jonestown Massacre, which went for $255... (thanks, Kaden)

Check out Kevork's web site. No prices; just tell him what your budget is....

If you have to ask, you can't afford it....

    Hi,
great site. I would imagine that the BJM have no shortage of blood-spattered gear. Joel Gion was a virtuoso of the tambo. Like Bez his "just being there" and vibe were so important.

If you don't know the BJM check out Who or anemoni or fucker or ....

Great site, did I say that already?

801? That dude must be a real sucker for tambourine shakin' . It makes vintage synth prices a steal. I wonder what kind of questions the buyer asks the seller of a 800 dollar tambourine to assure he's getting the real deal? But i bet there are 800 bucks claves as well... You just need to be geeky enough!

the riq is not just an middle eastern tamborine. like the pandeiro in brazilian music it is played with quite a lot of subtle technique. Check this out or YouTube 'riq'

The above makes a good point. The riqq is the most important Arabic music percussion instrument. The riqq player leads the rhythm section and controls the tempo and feel of the entire ensemble. Arabic traditional maqam compositions are tightly integrated with the rhythmic modes expounded by the riqq. Check out www.maqamworld.com for the straight dope.
