The Japanese War Tuba and other strange devices

Before radar, the military used to find enemy aircraft by listening really hard, using huge, arcane devices called Acoustic Locators. The Kircher Society have this report, which links to this wonderful page with lots of photographs of acoustic locators like the gigantic Japanese war tubas at the top. From the same site, the even more wonderful Failed Amplifier Projects page, with tonnes of awesome audio craziness.

goddamn that is awsome.

Love that picture - even used it myself ;)

All this tells me is that we haven't spent nearly enough time researching giant cow-bells.
