Jean Baudin collects really, really fat basses. He has a pacman themed 9 string bass, with ghost/pacman machine heads. He's getting a 12 string bass made. What does he do with these monstrous things? He
plays the Super Mario Bros. theme music [mov]. I'm speechless.
More crazy-ass guitar playing
here and
here. (Thanks Matthew)
Two words to describe that bass...
ReplyDelete"Penis Extention"

ReplyDeleteIt's got girth, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteI still like this guy better.
ReplyDeleteNot terribly dissimilar in look and product from a Warr Guitar. Lacks the Warr Guitar sexy tunings though!
ReplyDeleteHe's playing it like a Chapman Stick http://www.stick.com/
ReplyDeleteyah that's cool, but it's not nearly as cool as teh asian dude who did it on a 6-string guitar and actually made the sound effects as if you were playing it. It basically sounded exactly like it does when you load the game up and play, he had the coin "chings" and everything.

ReplyDeleteI like thin necks. I think they are sexier. What the hell are you supposed to do with all those strings??
ReplyDeleteThat owns some serious balls.
ReplyDeleteAsian dude playing guitar was using a Midi guitar he didnt make the coin sounds he sampled them and then the computer played them back when he played a certain harmonic.
ReplyDeleteThe bass player is by far the better musician.
With that many strings it stops being a "bass" as such.
ReplyDeleteIt's not to my taste, but if it makes him happy...
agreed, the bass player is the better of the two. the guitar player is rather sloppy, and there is too much wickachicka. that bass isn't quite a bass for sure, but it is far from the penis extension that was superdork's axe. also not my taste.
ReplyDeleteyou people obviously have no musical talent. "OMR ASIAN DUDE! SOUNDS! OMG!"
ReplyDeleteFuck the asian guy this guy is better.
Not only does he play the rythem part of the mario song he ALSO plays the BASS part AT THE SAME TIME.
Id like to see mr asian do that.
coin sounds and all.
Yeah, but the Asian dude only had one hand on the fretboard...
ReplyDeleteUmm, and musicianship isn't about playing a bunch of notes real fast... I couldn't tell you who was the better musician after watching two lil' clips. Bill Frissel is a great one, but you'd never know it from watching him dick around for a while...
For all we know one guy could have been performing this for years, and the other guy video taped it after learning it in a weekend.
They both rock. Super-Mario though is lame. What ever happened to Ms. Pac-Man??
the asian fellow has his charm as far as what he's doing, but i just prefer what jean is doing. i'd like to see what else the asian guy can do. if you go to the bottom of the text on Mr. Baudin's page (he needs a new page) there is a link to him playing a piece by Bach. very cool.
ReplyDeletethe Ms Pacman clip is on his myspace account. there is a link to that in all that text as well.
Ms. Pac-Man makes me horny!
ReplyDeleteLink is dead. Anyone hosting it anywhere else? I wanna see this dude play :)
ReplyDeletego to jeanbaudin.com for a new link and an explanation.
ReplyDeletehere's the aforementioned "asian guy":

To the one who said that the asian dude was playing a midi guitar with the sounds sampled, that is rubbish. You don't know what you're talking about. You can make the sound fx he was making on any old guitar, which is what he was playing. Had he used a midi guitar with the sounds sampled it would have sound a lot more spectacular. I should know, I have a midi guitar that I run through a NES. But anyway, the asian dude sucked, not much of what he was doing was all too difficult and he was EXTREMELY sloppy. I came across another video with some other guy playing the tune almost exactly the same as the asian guy, but more precisely. If someone can find the link to that... BUT neither of them are ANY comparison to Jean. Jean is an amazing musician. And he's not just a wanky noodly soloist. He can play real stuff. Melodic stuff, not wiggly soloing.
ReplyDeleteYou can't imagine how difficult it is to tap the ryhthm and bass at the same time on a song like that.

ok, i am a bassist and i love those basses, sure i would be lost on them, but being lost is the only reason you take up an instrument, so that you can find you niche'.
ReplyDeletebut regardless of what any of you think that mario theme is some talented peice of work, i mean, that is electronica music,
I got a video of myself playing the mario brothers theme on a classical guitar up on my myspace
ReplyDeletewww.myspace.com/alanlewis .
I tried to take a more... traditional approach :P
That "asian" guy is keichi... highly considered one of the most talented guitar players in Japan. What you fail to observe is his arrangement of the theme. The chords and shapes he uses change on a virtual note by note basis. The fact that he's a little sloppy? who cares i mean.. he could have recorded himself over and over till he got it perfect... but when i'm playing i don't bother with that unless i want to. if i'm showing my buddies something there's no point.
ReplyDeleteWOW!
