Why are soundcards so ugly?

Thank god for the new soundcards from Echo. This is the Layla 3G, and while I'm not sure about naming your card after a terrible Eric Clapton song and an obsolete Apple Mac, it sure is pretty. Which is a good thing, because soundcards have got really, really ugly in the last few years. A while back, they all had a straightforward 'professional gear' look, but recently everyone's trying to look clever, and it's like geeks on prom night. My EMU 1820M sounds great, but has weird curvey sides and is covered in cheap plastic. Worse, the M-Audio range is taking design hints from those microwave ovens they sell for £35 in Comet. Anyway, they all sound great, and all...
